1.     Federated free/busy sharing
Access free/busy information of an external user in a partner's company. The published Exchange availability service of the partner's company answers directly using the requested information from user's mailbox. No public system folder is used anymore.

2.     Federated calendar sharing
Access calendar information of an external user in a partner's company. The user has to ask the external user to share his calendar by using the features of Outlook or Outlook Web App.

3.     Federated contact sharing
Access private contacts information of an external user in a partner's company. The user has to ask the external user before to share his contacts by using the features of Outlook or Outlook Web App.

In this second part I will give a technical level overview about what Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Federation services provide and what the limitations are.

 When synchronizing mail objects between forests you might want to modify the display name in the target. This is sometimes required if in source display name is built by "<surname> <lastname>" but in target you need "<lastname>, <firstname>". Or you want to present synchronized objects as "<lastname>, <firstname> [external]".

What happens behind the scenes when synchronizing free/busy data between multiple Exchange organizations using GALsync?

When synchronizing different mail organizations GALsync reads the free/busy information of selected user objects in source and stores them in target as free/busy information related to the synchronized contact object.

GALsync does not sync free/busy every time it is modified in source. You might want to export free/busy times in a time window of minimal 5 minutes.

If you want to share address lists between multiple forests (cross-forest sync) different topologies are to be considered. Using GALsync in a mesh-topology provides a synchronizing of Global Address List between each Exchange organization, in a uni-directional 2-way sync only data between a source and a target organization would be exchanged.
